| Obverse description | Fourth portrait effigy of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara, as designed by Ian Rank-Broadley. The legend ELIZABETH II encircles the upper field, with AUSTRALIA and the denomination 100 DOLLARS positioned below. The designer's initials IRB appear truncated at the bust. The portrait is rendered in fine relief against a polished field, framed by a beaded border. |

Perth Mint's lunar bullion series launched in 1996 and completed its first twelve-year cycle with the 2007 Pig — meaning this 2006 Dog issue falls in the penultimate year of Series I. The series was conceived explicitly to compete with the Chinese Panda and American Eagle programs in the Asian collector-investor market, and distribution was weighted heavily toward Hong Kong and Singapore dealers from the outset.
The fourth portrait of Elizabeth II, by Ian Rank-Broadley, was adopted by the Perth Mint in 1999.
