Additional information

Australia's Gold Nugget series launched in 1986, originally depicting actual gold nuggets found on Australian soil before transitioning in 1989 to kangaroo reverses that change design annually. The .9999 fineness adopted for this series was a deliberate commercial decision to undercut the Krugerrand's .9167 standard and compete directly with the Canadian Maple Leaf in the investment bullion market.

The 2011 issue falls under Ian Rank-Broadley's fourth portrait of Elizabeth II, introduced on Australian coinage in 1999.
