Australia's 2002 platinum Koala series marked the first year Perth used pad printing on a bullion coin — a technique borrowed from industrial manufacturing that allowed color application directly onto the metal surface without the use of a separate insert. The "Multiculturalism" designation placed this piece within a themed sub-series celebrating Australian national identity, issued alongside gold and silver variants of varying denominations.
Pad printing adhesion on platinum proved technically demanding, and quality consistency across the 2002 run was uneven enough that the method was refined in subsequent years.
