Additional information

Australia's gold koala bullion series launched in 1980 under the RAM before the Perth Mint took over production, and the annual design change policy — unlike the fixed reverse of a Krugerrand or Maple Leaf — was a deliberate commercial strategy to encourage year-on-year collector demand alongside investment buying. The 2013 issue falls within the period when Perth was aggressively expanding its .9999 fine bullion program, having refined its four-nines purity standard as a direct competitive response to the Royal Canadian Mint's dominance in the ultra-fine bullion market through the 1990s.

The fourth portrait of Elizabeth II, by Ian Rank-Broadley, was adopted by Australian coinage in 1999.
