Australia's platinum koala program launched in 1987, positioning the Perth Mint in direct competition with the Canadian Maple Leaf and American Eagle platinum markets before either of those countries had issued a platinum bullion coin. The one-ounce denomination was the flagship of the series, intended for institutional investors moving into platinum as a hedge during a period of significant South African supply uncertainty — Pretoria's political instability raised real concerns about the dominant source of the world's platinum.
