Additional information

The Grey Kangaroo gold proof was part of Perth Mint's push in the late 1980s and early 1990s to establish Australia as a serious competitor in the international bullion and numismatic gold market, directly challenging the South African Krugerrand and the Canadian Maple Leaf. The .9999 fineness — four nines — was a deliberate marketing and metallurgical choice, exceeding the Maple Leaf's then-standard .9999 purity claim and positioning Australian product as the benchmark for fine gold coinage.

KM#144 spans two calendar years, with dies and packaging differentiated by date. The 1991-dated pieces saw lower collector uptake as the series was already maturing.
