| Reverse description | A large football rendered in high relief dominates the upper field, set against a goal net in the background. To the left, a prominent bust of Queen Elizabeth II faces right in a contemporary portrait style. To the right and centre, the Italian national football team is depicted in a formal group photograph pose, with players seated in the front row and standing in the rear. Niue's large-format commemorative program of the late 1980s and early 1990s was a frankly commercial operation — the island territory issued coins primarily for the collector market, with New Zealand handling monetary policy and Niue contributing little beyond its name on the legal tender designation. The 1990 FIFA World Cup, held in Italy, generated an enormous wave of licensed merchandise and numismatic issues from dozens of issuers worldwide, most with no footballing connection whatsoever.
KM#73 sits in that crowded field. Struck at approximately 5 troy ounces, it was aimed squarely at the bullion-adjacent commemorative buyer rather than circulation.
