Issued to mark the quincentennial run-up to Columbus's 1492 landfall, which most scholars now place at San Salvador — known to the Lucayan Taíno as Guanahani — squarely within present-day Bahamian territory. The Bahamas had a particular claim to lead commemorative coinage on this theme, though the question of the exact landfall island remained actively debated among historians well into the 1990s.
Friedberg 50 places this among a small series of Bahamian gold issues tied to the anniversary cycle. Mintages were limited and collector-directed from the outset.
