Additional information

Issued to mark the United Nations Decade for Women (1976–1985), this Liberian gold piece was part of a broader wave of commemorative coinage produced by nations with limited domestic minting capacity — Liberia struck it under contract, as it did most of its coin issues during this period. The UN Decade culminated in the 1985 Nairobi conference, which the coin nominally commemorates.

Liberia's own record on women's rights during this period was complicated; the country was two years into Samuel Doe's military government following the 1980 coup that killed President Tolbert.
