Reverse description A full-length standing figure of Christopher Columbus occupies the central field, depicted in period dress and hat, his right arm outstretched and pointing toward the horizon in a gesture of discovery, while his left hand holds a document or chart. A companion figure stands at his left, and the rigging and hull of one of his caravels — visible at left — and the mast and deck of another vessel appear at right. The legend 'ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS' arcs along the upper periphery, with 'SAN SALVADOR' inscribed across the upper field. The commemorative inscription 'COLUMBUS DISCOVERS THE NEW WORLD' curves along the lower field, with the date '1988' in the exergue. A beaded border frames the entire design, and the engraver's initials 'FG' appear in the lower right field.
