The Artemis program, NASA's return-to-Moon initiative, provided the commercial hook for a wave of commemorative issues from mints worldwide beginning around 2022. Perth's entry into this space is among the more precisely timed — Artemis I completed its uncrewed lunar flyby in December 2022, making this 2023 issue the first Perth Artemis gold coin struck under Charles III following Elizabeth II's death in September of that year. The reign change mid-series creates a de facto two-monarch collecting pair with any preceding Elizabeth II Artemis issues.
