Obverse description The obverse is executed in fine intaglio engraving and presents a symmetrical, portrait-flanked composition: at left, an oval bust portrait of a bearded gentleman, and at right, a bust portrait of another male figure designated as President. At centre, a large allegorical vignette depicts a seated female figure with a globe and sceptre, rendered in intricate crosshatch engraving and surrounded by elaborate guilloche scrollwork. The denomination ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS is repeated in ornate letterpress at lower centre, with numeral 100 counters at each corner, and the bank title BANK OF MONTREAL arches across the top in bold block lettering.
