The National Bank Note Company printed this note in New York — for a government at war with the United States. The contract was placed before hostilities made such arrangements impossible, and NBNC fulfilled it before severing ties with Confederate clients. That timing matters: early Confederate notes like this one were competently produced by an established American security printer, which distinguishes them sharply from the cruder domestic output that followed once Southern states had to manage printing themselves.
Pick 2 is among the earliest federally authorized Confederate issues. The cotton paper substrate reflects both regional material availability and a deliberate attempt at durability.
