Yugoslavia secured the rights to host the 1984 Winter Games in Sarajevo over competing bids from Sapporo and Falun, making it the first socialist country to host a Winter Olympics. The commemorative coinage program accompanying the games was extensive — this speed skating issue was one of several denominations released across both silver and base metal strikes, with the silver versions sold directly to collectors through the Narodna Banka Jugoslavije rather than released into general circulation.
