Serbia's earliest paper currency series was born out of fiscal necessity following the establishment of the Uprava fondova (Fund Administration) as a state-issuing authority — the country still lacked a proper central bank, which would not arrive until the Narodna banka was founded in 1883. These first dinara notes circulated alongside Austrian and Turkish coinage in a population that had no particular reason to trust domestic paper.

Pick 5 is the highest denomination in the 1876 series. Large-denomination notes from this issue are considerably scarcer than the lower values, partly because high-denomination notes tend to move through fewer hands before retirement and partly because many were administratively cancelled rather than worn out in trade.
