Goce Delčev was killed by Ottoman forces in May 1903, just months before the Ilinden Uprising he helped organize — the rebellion that briefly established the Kruševo Republic before being crushed within ten days. This 2003 issue marks the centenary of both his death and that doomed insurrection, which nonetheless became the foundational myth of Macedonian national identity. The post-Yugoslav republic had only declared independence in 1991, making the centenary an early opportunity to anchor a newly sovereign state to a deeper historical claim.
