Vietnam's involvement in the 1996 Atlanta Games marked only the country's third appearance at the Summer Olympics — the national Olympic committee had been recognized by the IOC in 1979, but Cold War-era boycotts and economic isolation under the U.S. embargo kept consistent participation elusive.
