Obverse description The obverse features the national coat of arms of Costa Rica at center, depicting three volcanoes rising above a calm sea with a sailing vessel, flanked by seven stars above and lush vegetation to either side, all within an ornate cartouche. A ribbon bearing the legend REPUBLICA DE COSTA RICA arches across the upper portion of the shield, with AMERICA CENTRAL inscribed on a banner above. The circular legend REPUBLICA DE COSTA RICA runs along the outer border, framed by a continuous ring of beads. The date 1995 appears in the lower field beneath the shield.
