Obverse description Cast copper coin with a central square hole, bearing four large Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) arranged in cruciform fashion around the central perforation, reading top-to-bottom and right-to-left. The character 咸 appears at the top, 元 to the right, 寶 at the bottom, and 豐 to the left, together forming the reign title inscription 咸豐元寶 (Xianfeng Yuanbao, meaning 'Xianfeng Original Currency'). The bold, well-defined raised characters occupy the broad flat field, which is framed by a raised outer rim and a raised inner rim surrounding the square hole. The surfaces display a characteristic patina consistent with cast Qing Dynasty copper coinage.
