King Bhumibol Adulyadej — Rama IX — died on 13 October 2016 after a 70-year reign, the longest of any Thai monarch and, at the time, the longest of any living head of state in the world. This commemorative issue was released during the official one-year mourning period, when the country's public ceremonies, broadcasting, and even commercial activity were sharply curtailed. The black-dominant color scheme, unusual for Thai currency, was a deliberate departure from the regular series to mark the occasion.

Pick 132 is a single-denomination commemorative, not a replacement for circulating stock — though it is legal tender.
