The austral was introduced in 1985 as Argentina's answer to hyperinflation, replacing the peso at a rate of 1,000 to one. It didn't work. By the time these aluminium 100-austral pieces entered circulation, inflation had exceeded 3,000% annually, and the denomination that had seemed substantial at introduction was functionally worthless within months. The currency was abandoned entirely in 1992, replaced by the convertible peso under Cavallo's economic reforms.
