Additional information

Rwanda has no native shoebill population — the species inhabits swamps from Sudan down through Uganda and Zambia. This coin belongs to a long-running series of Rwandan-issued wildlife bullion pieces that leverage the country's banking infrastructure to produce internationally marketed collector gold, a practice common among smaller nations whose mints serve the global numismatic trade rather than domestic circulation needs. The shoebill itself has been classified as Vulnerable since 2004, with fewer than 8,000 individuals estimated in the wild.
