Rwanda has issued mountain gorilla-themed bullion coinage since 2015, positioning the series as a flagship product for the East African nation's growing numismatic export program. The National Bank of Rwanda has leaned heavily into wildlife coinage as a revenue stream, partnering with European minting houses — primarily B.H. Mayer's Kunstprägeanstalt in Germany — to produce pieces distributed almost entirely to Western collector markets rather than domestic circulation.
The "anniversary" designation marks a milestone within the series itself. Surviving examples of early-date Rwanda gorilla issues in original packaging have already begun commanding premiums above melt on the secondary market.
