Ålesund Sentrumsforening — the town centre merchants' association — issued these local scrip notes as a promotional currency redeemable at participating retailers in Ålesund during the early 1990s. This type of chamber-of-commerce voucher circulated widely in Norwegian market towns during that period, functioning as a gift certificate scheme dressed in banknote clothing rather than any form of emergency or parallel currency.
Survival rates are high; these were designed to be redeemed, not saved, yet many were kept as novelties.
