Da Afghanistan Bank issued this note following the July 1973 coup that overthrew King Mohammed Zahir Shah and abolished the monarchy. The series it belongs to was among the first to reflect the new republican government — a political transition that required rapid reissuing of currency to remove royal associations from circulation.
Thomas De La Rue's involvement was long-standing with Afghan currency by this point, and the cotton substrate and single watermark security spec were consistent with what the Afghan banking system could practically authenticate given limited branch infrastructure outside Kabul.
