This note was issued to mark the 150th anniversary of Sun Yat-sen's birth — November 12, 1866 — a figure claimed by both the People's Republic and the Republic of China on Taiwan as the founding father of modern China. The PRC's willingness to honor him so prominently reflects his unique status as the one historical figure neither side of the strait disputes, which makes commemorative issues like this politically useful in ways that go well beyond numismatics.
The holographic strip is a late addition to Chinese commemorative paper production; earlier anniversary notes in comparable series relied on intaglio printing alone as the primary security measure.
