Issued to mark the 120th anniversary of Mao Zedong's birth on 26 December 1893, this is one of a small number of commemorative polymer notes issued by the People's Bank of China — a format the institution has used sparingly for special issues. China's adoption of polymer substrate for commemorative rather than circulating notes reflects a deliberate distinction: these were produced for collection, not the cash economy.

The 2013 issue followed similar anniversary notes from 1993 and 2003, making it the third in a decade-spanning series tied to the December 26 birth date.
