The Solidarność commemorative program of 1990 coincided with the Polish People's Republic formally dissolving into the Third Polish Republic — a transition that created genuine institutional uncertainty at the mint in Warsaw. Trial strikes like this piece were produced to test dies and planchet specifications before authorizing full production runs, and they rarely left official hands through legitimate channels. Most that appear on the market today were either deaccessioned from NBP archives or reached collectors through the loosening of state controls during the early 1990s transition period.
The nickel composition distinguishes this trial from the issued silver versions, a deliberate substitution to reduce material cost during proofing.
