This piece belongs to a wave of commemorative issues Poland released almost immediately after the fall of communist rule, when the state mint was suddenly free to rehabilitate figures who had been ideologically suppressed for decades. Piłsudski — founder of the Second Republic, architect of the 1920 victory over Soviet Russia — had been an awkward figure under the People's Republic, acknowledged grudgingly if at all.
The face value of 100,000 złotych reflects the terminal inflation of the communist-era economy, which by 1990 had rendered ordinary denominations nearly meaningless. Poland redenominated in 1995, making this nominally worth one new grosz.
