Vereinigte Kaufmannschaft Herne — the United Merchants' Association of Herne — was one of countless commercial bodies in the Ruhr forced to issue emergency currency during the hyperinflation of 1923. The occupation of the Ruhr by French and Belgian troops in January of that year had severed normal banking and supply chains, and local merchants faced a practical collapse of the money supply well before the Reichsmark itself imploded in autumn.
Notgeld at this denomination from a municipal merchants' association rather than a municipal government or savings bank is relatively uncommon. The issuing body had no formal banking authority — the notes circulated on commercial trust alone.
