Bad Dürkheim sits in the Palatinate, a region that in 1923 was under French military occupation following the Treaty of Versailles — which complicated even routine municipal finance. This 100,000 Mark note is Notgeld, emergency currency issued by the city treasury to compensate for the near-total collapse of Reichsbank note distribution during the hyperinflation peak. By mid-1923, denominations that had seemed absurd months earlier were already obsolete within weeks of printing.
J. Rheinberger was a local printer, not a specialist banknote firm, and the production reflects that — these notes were functional stopgaps, not prestige issues. The Palatinate's occupation status meant that even municipal emergency currency existed in a legally ambiguous space between German civil authority and French military administration.
