Hofgeismar is a small district town in northern Hesse, and like hundreds of German municipal authorities in 1923, it issued its own emergency currency — Notgeld — when Reichsbank notes simply could not be printed fast enough to keep pace with hyperinflation. The 100,000 Mark denomination, which would have seemed extraordinary even weeks earlier, was already losing purchasing power the moment it left Gebr. Gärtner's press in Kassel.
Gebr. Gärtner was a regional commercial printer, not a specialist banknote house, which is typical of late-phase hyperinflation Notgeld — municipal authorities took whoever could deliver quickly.
