Comments

Three separate institutions — the Gewerbebanken of Balingen, Ebingen, and Tailfingen, alongside the Oberamtssparkasse Balingen — issued this note jointly, an unusual cooperative arrangement driven purely by the practical collapse of the Reichsbank's ability to supply sufficient currency during the hyperinflation peak of 1923. Local chambers, savings banks, and municipal bodies across Württemberg were issuing their own emergency Notgeld at this point simply to keep wage payments moving.

The 100,000 Mark denomination, which would have seemed extraordinary just months earlier, was already losing ground to inflation before most of these notes had finished circulating.
