Bonn und Sieg issued this note during the summer of 1923, when hyperinflation was accelerating so rapidly that municipal and district authorities across the Rhineland resorted to printing their own emergency currency — Notgeld — simply to meet payroll and maintain basic commerce. The 100,000 Mark denomination, unthinkable just two years earlier, was itself briefly adequate before becoming functionally worthless within weeks of issue.
M. DuMont Schauberg, the Cologne press better known for newspaper printing, handled a considerable volume of Rhineland Notgeld contracts during this period — the guilloche underprint here is characteristic of their security work on emergency issues.
