Reutlingen was among hundreds of German municipalities that issued their own emergency currency during the hyperinflation of 1923, when the Reichsbank could not produce notes fast enough to keep pace with collapsing purchasing power. By the time a 100,000 Mark denomination was necessary, the figure had ceased to mean anything in practical terms — the note would have lost most of its real value within days of issue.

The watermarked paper suggests the city sourced pre-security stock rather than printing on plain commercial paper, which was not universal among Notgeld issuers at this denomination level. Worth noting for collectors tracking Württemberg municipal issues.
