Additional information

Issued as part of Italy's long-running series of commemorative gold lire struck in the years immediately before euro adoption, this piece marks the reconstruction of the Basilica of San Francesco following the devastating Umbrian earthquakes of September 1997. The quakes killed eleven people inside the basilica itself — four of them working to document damage from an earlier tremor that same morning — and brought down a significant portion of the nave's medieval ceiling frescoes, including sections attributed to Cimabue.

Restoration was completed with unusual speed, the basilica reopening in November 1999. This coin was struck the same year.
