Paraguay's 100,000 Guaraní note was introduced partly in response to the chronic inflationary erosion that had made lower denominations impractical for everyday commercial transactions by the early 2000s. It represented the highest face value in Paraguayan circulation at the time of issue — a denomination that would have been unthinkable two decades earlier, when the guaraní still held considerably more purchasing power.

Thomas De La Rue's involvement is unremarkable for the region; the London firm has printed for the Banco Central del Paraguay across multiple series. The see-through register, achieved by precise front-to-back alignment of complementary printed elements, is the one security feature on this note that requires genuinely tight press registration to execute correctly.
