| Reverse description | The central field depicts a stylised composition of Hungarian revolutionary flags, rendered as abstracted flag-pole and banner forms rising from a ground textured with the repetitive incuse inscription '1956' in italic script, symbolising the spirit and memory of the 1956 uprising. The flag motifs are boldly modelled in high relief against the finely granulated background. The circular legend 'MAGYAR FORRADALOM ÉS SZABADSÁGHARC · 1956' runs along the periphery within a wide polished border. A small mint master's mark appears at the lower centre of the legend. |

| Additional information |
Issued on the fiftieth anniversary of the October 1956 uprising, in which Hungarian citizens and students rose against Soviet occupation and the ÁVH secret police before being crushed by a Red Army intervention that killed an estimated 2,500 Hungarians and drove some 200,000 into exile. The revolt lasted less than two weeks. Soviet tanks entered Budapest on November 4th; organized resistance was effectively over within days.
The .986 fineness is unusually high for a modern commemorative gold issue — fractionally purer than the more common .900 or .9999 standards — a deliberate choice by the MNB for this particular series.
