Reverse description The reverse is printed entirely in dark red on plain paper and occupies the full note area with a large scenic vignette in a fine line-engraved style. At lower left, a narrow-gauge steam tram ('Feurige Elias') is shown in motion through a valley landscape, while at right a standing male figure in working attire leans on a tool, surveying the panoramic view of the Vorgebirge hills and a church-steepled town below. The composition is enclosed by a simple ruled border with wave-scroll ornaments at the lateral margins, and bold letterpress inscriptions run across the top and bottom edges.

Comments

Landkreis Bonn — the rural administrative district surrounding the city, distinct from the municipal government — issued this note under emergency powers during the hyperinflation peak of autumn 1923, when the Reichsbank could not supply currency fast enough to meet payroll and basic commerce. The Kreis-Ausschuss, essentially a county executive committee, had no tradition of note issuance; it was pressed into it by circumstance. Notgeld at this denomination level was obsolete almost immediately after printing — by November 1923, a hundred million marks bought almost nothing.

Locally printed issues from district-level authorities rather than municipal or savings bank issuers are less common in Rhineland Notgeld collecting.
