Bamberg's hundred-million mark note dates from the hyperinflation peak of autumn 1923, when municipal and regional authorities across Germany were authorized to issue emergency currency — Notgeld — to compensate for the Reichsbank's inability to supply sufficient physical denominations fast enough. By October that year, a single loaf of bread could cost several hundred million marks, which puts the face value here in grim perspective.
Printed locally by J. Nagengast, a Bamberg-based commercial printer with no specialist security printing background. The watermark is present, but municipal Notgeld of this type was notoriously easy to counterfeit, and local issuers rarely had the procurement infrastructure to enforce consistent paper quality across print runs — condition and paper texture can vary noticeably between examples of the same reference number.
