Bergisch Gladbach was one of hundreds of German municipalities that issued emergency currency during the hyperinflation of 1923, when the Reichsmark's collapse forced local authorities to print their own denominations simply to meet payroll and enable basic commerce. By the time notes in the hundred-million range were being issued, the inflation curve had gone near-vertical — the Reichsbank's own presses couldn't keep pace, let alone local city treasuries.
Heiss & Co. operated out of Cologne's Lindenthal district and handled notgeld contracts for several regional municipalities during this period. Municipal issues like this one were typically valid only within the issuing city's jurisdiction and for a strictly limited redemption window.
