Ludwigshafen's municipal administration issued this 100-million Mark note in the summer of 1923, when hyperinflation was accelerating fast enough that denominations of this size had a practical shelf life of days rather than weeks. Cities and towns throughout the Rhineland were printing their own emergency currency — Notgeld — because the Reichsbank simply could not produce paper money fast enough to meet demand. Weiss & Hameier were a local commercial printer, not a specialist security firm, which is exactly the point: by mid-1923, the barrier between banknote printing and ordinary jobbing print work had effectively collapsed.
