Sterkrade was a mid-sized industrial town in the Ruhr — part of the coalfield belt that French and Belgian troops occupied in January 1923 after Germany defaulted on reparations timber deliveries. The occupation strangled normal commerce and accelerated the collapse of the mark's purchasing power. Municipal authorities across the region issued emergency currency, Notgeld, because Reichsbank notes were either unavailable in sufficient quantity or worth almost nothing by the time they arrived.
By the time hundred-million mark denominations were necessary, the printing schedule was being outpaced by inflation within days of issue. Notes from this phase of the crisis were often obsolete before distribution was complete.
