Hörde's hundred-million mark note dates from the most violent phase of the German hyperinflation — August 1923, when municipal and county authorities across the Ruhr were printing emergency currency faster than the Reichsbank could supply denominations large enough to be useful. The Magistrat der Stadt Hörde and the Kreisausschuß des Landkreises Hörde issued jointly, which was itself a practical arrangement: pooling authorization reduced administrative friction when notes needed to reach workers within days of printing.
By the time most Hörde issues reached circulation, they were already obsolescent. A hundred million marks in late August 1923 could purchase roughly what a few thousand had bought months earlier.
