One of hundreds of emergency currency issues — Notgeld — flooding Germany during the hyperinflation peak of late 1923, when the Reichsmark had collapsed so completely that regional administrations, municipalities, and even private firms were authorized to print their own denominations just to keep wages and commerce moving. By November 1923, a hundred billion marks would barely cover a loaf of bread, if that. The joint issue by the Kreise Kreuznach and Meisenheim alongside the Stadt Kreuznach reflects how neighboring administrative districts pooled authority when the situation outpaced any single body's capacity to respond.
Rentenmark stabilization in late November 1923 rendered most of these notes void almost immediately after issue.
