Lörrach's municipal emergency money reached this denomination — one hundred billion marks — in October 1923, when the Reichsmark was collapsing so fast that local authorities could not wait for Berlin to supply adequate currency. The Stadtgemeinde issued it through Carl Haas's local print shop, a practical arrangement that characterised Notgeld production across southwestern Germany during the hyperinflation peak.

The official stamp served as the primary authentication device — essentially all that separated a valid note from a forgery, given the minimal production standards involved.
