Poland's postwar communist government maintained an awkward relationship with Kościuszko — a genuine national hero whose democratic ideals and American connections sat uncomfortably within the Soviet orbit, yet whose anti-Russian insurrectionary record made him too popular to ignore. This 1958 trial strike belongs to a period when the NBP was actively testing aluminum alloys for higher-denomination coinage, most of which never reached circulation. The "without próba" designation distinguishes it from the marked trial pieces; the absence of that stamp does not indicate a circulation strike, but rather a separate branch of the proof process.
