Additional information

Wyszyński spent over three years under house arrest between 1953 and 1956, imprisoned by Poland's communist government after refusing to subordinate the Church to state authority. His release came only after Gomułka's return to power and the political thaw of October 1956. This coin was issued on the twentieth anniversary of his death in 1981 — the same year, notably, that both John Paul II was shot in St. Peter's Square and martial law was declared in Poland.
