Jan II Kazimierz abdicated in 1668 after one of the most catastrophic reigns in Polish history — a period Poles call "the Deluge," during which Swedish, Russian, Cossack, and Brandenburgian forces simultaneously occupied large portions of the country. He retired to France and died in Nevers in 1672, the only Polish king to abdicate voluntarily until the partitions made the question moot.
This issue is part of NBP's ongoing commemorative series honoring Polish rulers, struck in the same year Poland marked the millennium of its statehood in various philatelic and numismatic programs.
