Grzegorz Ciechowski, frontman of the pioneering Polish new wave band Republika, died suddenly of a heart attack in December 2001 at age 41. The NBP has issued commemorative silver pieces honoring figures from Polish music, literature, and science in a long-running cultural series; Ciechowski's inclusion reflects the degree to which Republika's output — particularly their early 1980s recordings made under martial law censorship — had been reassessed as genuinely significant in Polish cultural memory. The martial law period made their oblique, atmospheric lyrics politically loaded in ways that only became fully discussable after 1989.
